What are Dental Cleanings?

Dental cleanings are essential for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. During a cleaning, a dentist removes bacteria, plaque, and tartar buildup. They may also offer preventive treatments like sealants and fluoride. If you're anxious, ask about sedation options for a more comfortable experience.

Dental cleanings come in various types, tailored to meet individual needs, yet all share the common objective of eradicating harmful bacteria and mitigating the risk of dental complications:

Types of Dental Cleanings

Prophylaxis: This routine, preventive cleaning is typically recommended for individuals with overall healthy teeth and gums. It's the most prevalent form of dental cleaning and serves as the focal point of this article.

Gross Debridement: Suited for individuals who haven't visited the dentist in over a year or those with substantial plaque accumulation, gross debridement resembles a standard prophylaxis but may necessitate a longer duration. Its primary aim is to identify any underlying issues that may have gone undetected before the cleaning.

Scaling and Root Planing: They are often referred to as deep dental cleaning, scaling, and root planing. These procedures target the removal of bacteria and hardened tartar (calculus) nestled deep beneath the gum line and around the roots of the teeth. Dentists typically reserve this procedure for individuals exhibiting mild to moderate periodontitis (gum disease). Patients undergoing scaling and root planing receive local anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Who Might Need Dental Cleanings in Rockledge, FL?

Regardless of age, everyone can benefit from regular dental cleanings at Sunflower Dental Spa. We recommend scheduling cleanings for:

  • Adults: Adults typically need dental cleanings every six months. However, the frequency may vary depending on your individual oral health needs.
  • Children: Children should begin seeing a dentist for cleanings and checkups by age one or when their first tooth erupts. Regular dental visits establish good oral hygiene habits early on and help ensure healthy teeth development.
  • Pregnant Women: Pregnant women are especially susceptible to gum disease due to hormonal changes. Regular dental cleanings prevent gum disease and protect your overall health during pregnancy.
  • People with Diabetes: Diabetes can increase your risk of gum disease. Regular dental cleanings are essential to maintain good oral health and manage diabetes effectively.
  • Smokers: Smoking weakens the immune system and increases the risk of gum disease. Regular cleanings can help mitigate the negative effects of smoking on oral health.

Benefits of Dental Cleanings in Rockledge, FL

Scheduling regular dental cleanings at Sunflower Dental Spa offers a multitude of benefits for your oral and overall health, including:

  • Preventing Gum Disease: Dental cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, which can harbor harmful bacteria contributing to gum disease. Gum disease can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
  • Preventing Cavities: By removing plaque and tartar close to the gumline, professional cleanings help prevent cavities from forming.
  • Fresher Breath: Regular cleanings remove food particles and bacteria that cause bad breath, leaving you with a fresh, minty smile.
  • Improved Overall Health: Studies have shown a link between gum disease and other health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Regular dental cleanings help maintain good oral health, positively impacting overall well-being.
  • Whiter Smile: Professional cleanings can remove surface stains from your teeth, revealing a brighter, whiter smile.
  • Early Detection of Oral Health Problems: During your cleaning, our dentist can detect any potential oral health problems in their early stages, allowing for prompt treatment and better outcomes.
  • Increased Confidence: A healthy smile can boost your confidence and self-esteem.
  • Cost-Effective: Regular dental cleanings are a preventive measure that can save you money in the long run by preventing the need for more expensive dental procedures in the future.

What to Expect During Dental Cleanings at Sunflower Dental Spa?

Our team at Sunflower Dental Spa is dedicated to providing a comfortable and relaxing experience for all our patients. Here's what you can expect during your dental cleaning appointment:

Consultation: We will begin with a brief consultation to discuss your oral health history and any concerns you may have.

Oral Examination: A thorough oral exam will assess your teeth and gums for signs of decay, gum disease, or other issues.

Scaling: Your dentist or hygienist will use scalers to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. An ultrasonic scaler might also be used, which vibrates and sprays water. Though you might hear scraping, this step shouldn't cause discomfort.

Polishing: Teeth polishing is done with a soft rubber cup and special paste or pumice, removing biofilm and reducing plaque buildup without harming your enamel, resulting in a cleaner, brighter smile.

Preventive Treatments: Depending on your oral health needs, additional preventive services might include:

  • Dental Sealants: Protect back teeth with deep grooves from cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Fluoride Treatments: Strengthen enamel and reduce the risk of cavities, which benefit both children and adults.

Dental X-rays: Routine X-rays, needed every six to 36 months, help detect underlying issues not visible during an exam. More frequent X-rays may be necessary for specific conditions.

Treatment Recommendations: If problems such as cavities or gum disease are found during your cleaning, your dentist or hygienist will discuss treatment options with you in detail.

FAQs

How often should you get a dental cleaning?

As per guidelines from the American Dental Association, it's advised that individuals schedule teeth cleanings based on intervals recommended by their dentist. Typically, this means every six months for most people. However, these intervals may vary depending on your specific oral health requirements.

Are dental cleanings worth it?

Regular dental cleanings play a crucial role in maintaining optimal oral health. Investing in preventive treatments such as cleanings is essential for preserving the health of your teeth and gums. It is more cost-effective than restorative procedures like fillings, crowns, or bridges. By reducing the buildup of plaque and tartar, dental cleanings significantly decrease your risk of developing common oral health issues, ultimately saving you money in the long run.

How much does dental cleanings cost?

Dental cleanings typically range from $75 to $200 without insurance, averaging around $125. Dental insurance plans often cover 100% of preventive care costs, including cleanings, though coverage specifics vary. Visiting a dentist within your network may result in lower out-of-pocket expenses. At Sunflower Dental Spa, we offer competitive pricing and accept various insurance plans to ensure accessible dental care for all.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻
Excellent team and dental care .

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
