How to Stop Gum Recession: Tips and Treatment Options

February 6, 2026

If you’re wondering how to stop gum recession, you’ve probably noticed your teeth looking longer or experienced sharp sensitivity when drinking hot or cold beverages. These are often the first signs that your gums are pulling away from your teeth.

Gum recession is a serious concern that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Fortunately, while gums don’t grow back on their own, you can take steps to halt further damage. In this guide, we’ll explore the most effective ways to stop gum recession, from simple lifestyle changes to advanced professional treatments.

What Causes Gum Recession?

Gum recession happens when your gum tissue pulls back, exposing more of your teeth or even the tooth roots. Several factors can contribute to this:

  • Poor oral hygiene: Not brushing and flossing properly can cause plaque to build up and irritate your gums, leading to recession.
  • Brushing too hard: Using a hard-bristled toothbrush or brushing too aggressively can damage your gums.
  • Genetics: Some people are more prone to gum recession due to their genetic makeup.
  • Tobacco use: Smoking or using tobacco products can harm your gums and increase your risk of recession.
  • Hormonal changes: Pregnancy, menopause, and puberty can make gums more vulnerable to recession.
  • Teeth grinding: Constant teeth grinding or Jaw clenching puts pressure on your gums, accelerating gum recession.

Understanding these causes is key to stopping gum recession and taking the right steps to protect your gums.

How to Recognize Gum Recession Early

It’s important to catch gum recession early to prevent it from getting worse. Some common signs to look out for include:

  • Tooth sensitivity: If your teeth hurt when eating hot or cold foods, it may indicate gum recession.
  • Exposed tooth roots: Your teeth might look longer than usual because the roots are becoming exposed.
  • Bleeding gums: If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it might indicate early gum problems.
  • Loose teeth: In severe cases, gum recession can cause teeth to become loose due to reduced gum support.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it's time to take action and talk to a dental professional to prevent further damage.

How to Stop Gum Recession at Home

You can take steps at home to help prevent gum recession or slow it down. Here’s what you can start doing today:

1. Improve Your Brushing and Flossing

Brushing your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush and using fluoride toothpaste can help remove plaque and keep your gums healthy. Make sure to brush twice a day and floss once a day to keep bacteria at bay.

2. Switch to a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush

If you’re using a hard-bristled toothbrush or brushing too hard, you might be damaging your gums. A soft-bristled toothbrush is gentle and effective, preventing gum tissue from wearing down over time.

3. Use Antibacterial Mouthwash

Mouthwash isn’t just for fresh breath. It can help reduce bacteria and plaque buildup along the gum line. Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash after brushing and flossing to maintain gum health.

4. Quit Smoking

Tobacco use is a major factor in gum recession. Smoking or chewing tobacco not only damages your gums but also makes them more susceptible to infection. Quitting smoking will significantly improve your gum health and prevent further recession.

5. Protect Your Teeth from Grinding

If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard can help protect your teeth and gums from the pressure that causes recession. Talk to your dentist about getting a custom-fit night guard to protect your gums from further harm.

How to Stop Gum Recession with Professional Treatments

If home care isn’t enough and the gum recession has progressed, professional treatments might be necessary. Here are a few options:

1. Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment that removes plaque and tartar below the gumline. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), this treatment can help reduce inflammation and promote gum healing, which may stop the progression of gum recession.

2. Gum Grafting

If your gums are severely receded, your dentist might recommend a gum graft. This involves taking healthy tissue from another part of your mouth and grafting it onto the areas where the gums have receded. The goal is to restore the lost gum tissue and protect the exposed tooth roots. Gum grafts can significantly improve gum health and reduce the risk of further recession.

3. Laser Therapy

Laser treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that can remove damaged gum tissue and encourage new tissue growth. It’s an excellent option for people who want a quick recovery with minimal discomfort.

4. Pinhole Surgical Technique

The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST) is a newer, minimally invasive procedure that allows your dentist to reposition your gum tissue without stitches. It’s a fast and effective way to treat gum recession.

Effective Tips to Stop Gum Recession

Preventing gum recession starts with daily habits that protect your gums and keep them healthy, reducing the risk of further damage.

  1. Brush Gently: Use a soft-bristle toothbrush and brush gently in circular motions to avoid damaging your gums.
  2. Floss Daily: Floss once daily to remove plaque between your teeth and along the gumline, helping prevent gum disease.
  3. Avoid Smoking: Quit smoking and tobacco use to reduce the risk of gum disease and recession.
  4. Eat a Nutrient-Rich Diet: Include calcium, vitamin C, and antioxidants to support healthy gums.
  5. See Your Dentist Regularly: Schedule regular cleanings to prevent plaque buildup and catch gum recession early.

Conclusion

Gum recession doesn’t have to be a permanent problem. With improved oral hygiene, lifestyle changes, and professional treatments like gum grafting or scaling and root planing, you can prevent further gum loss and protect your oral health. Early intervention is key; if you notice signs such as tooth sensitivity or bleeding gums, don’t wait. FAQs

Is Gum Grafting the Only Treatment for Severe Gum Recession?

While gum grafting is an effective treatment for severe gum recession, other options like scaling and root planing or laser therapy can be considered depending on the severity. Your dentist can recommend the best treatment based on your condition.

Can Using a Mouthwash Help Prevent Gum Recession?

Yes, using an antibacterial mouthwash can help reduce plaque buildup and bacteria along the gum line, preventing gum disease, which contributes to gum recession. Look for a mouthwash that contains fluoride or ingredients like chlorhexidine.

How Long Does It Take to Recover from Gum Grafting?

Recovery from gum grafting takes 1–2 weeks for the soft tissue to heal, with full healing taking up to 3–6 months. Following your dentist's aftercare instructions is crucial for a smooth recovery and optimal results.

How Can I Stop Gum Recession Without Surgery?

If you’re looking to stop gum recession without surgery, focus on improving your oral hygiene, using antibacterial mouthwash, and addressing any underlying causes, such as teeth grinding. Professional treatments like scaling and root planing can also help manage recession without the need for surgical intervention.

Can Gums Grow Back After Recession?

Unfortunately, gums do not grow back once they’ve receded. However, treatments like gum grafting, scaling, and root planing can restore tissue and protect exposed roots, preventing further damage.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
