How to Stop Tooth Pain Fast: Proven Remedies and When to See a Dentist

April 27, 2026

A sudden toothache has a way of taking over your entire day. It can interrupt your work, disturb your sleep, and make even simple tasks uncomfortable. Whether you feel a sharp sensitivity when drinking something cold or a constant throbbing discomfort, the priority becomes clear: how to stop tooth pain fast.

This guide explains safe, dentist-recommended ways to manage tooth pain at home, outlines the most likely causes, and helps you recognize when professional care is necessary.

Why Does My Tooth Hurt?

Tooth pain is often a signal that something requires attention. It does not occur without a reason. Common causes include:

  1. Tooth decay that has progressed into deeper layers
  2. A cracked or chipped tooth exposing sensitive inner structures (internal blog link)
  3. Gum disease causing inflammation near the root (internal service link)
  4. A dental abscess, which is a serious bacterial infection
  5. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism
  6. A damaged or missing filling, crown, or other restoration

The nature of the pain often provides useful insight. Sensitivity to hot or cold may indicate early decay or exposed dentin. Persistent throbbing pain, especially with swelling or fever, often suggests infection and requires immediate care.

How Can I Stop Tooth Pain Fast?

These methods offer temporary relief while you arrange a dental visit. They help manage discomfort but do not treat the underlying issue.

1. Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

Ibuprofen is often the most effective option because it reduces both pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen is an alternative for those who cannot take ibuprofen. Always follow dosage instructions. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums, as it can damage soft tissue.

2. Warm Saltwater Rinse

A saltwater rinse helps reduce bacteria and inflammation. Mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of salt into 8 ounces of warm water. Repeat two to three times daily. The American Dental Association recognizes this as a safe and effective oral care method.

3. Cold Compress

If swelling is present, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek for 15 to 20 minutes. This helps reduce inflammation and numb the area. Always wrap ice in a cloth before applying it to the skin.

4. Clove Oil (Eugenol)

Clove oil contains eugenol, which provides natural numbing and antibacterial effects. Apply a small amount using a cotton ball to the affected area. Use sparingly to avoid irritation.

5. OTC Dental Numbing Gels

Products containing benzocaine provide short-term relief by numbing the area. These are useful before a dental appointment. Avoid use in children under 2 without medical advice.

6. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping

Keeping your head elevated helps reduce blood pressure in the affected area, which can ease throbbing pain and improve sleep.

What Should I Avoid When I Have a Toothache?

Some habits can increase sensitivity, worsen inflammation, and delay relief. While dealing with a toothache, avoid the following:

  1. Extremely hot or cold foods and drinks, as they can trigger sharp pain
  2. Sugary foods and beverages, which fuel bacteria and aggravate decay
  3. Hard or crunchy foods that place pressure on the affected tooth
  4. Chewing on the painful side can intensify discomfort
  5. Placing aspirin directly on the gums can damage soft tissue and cause irritation

Making these small adjustments helps reduce irritation and prevents the condition from getting worse while you arrange professional care.

When Should I See a Dentist for Tooth Pain?

Home care provides temporary relief, but professional treatment is often required. Contact a dentist if you experience:

  1. Pain lasting more than one to two days
  2. Swelling in the gums, jaw, or face
  3. Fever, chills, or a bad taste in the mouth
  4. Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  5. Severe pain not controlled by medication
  6. A broken or knocked-out tooth- visit our Emergency Dentistry page for immediate guidance

Dental abscesses require urgent attention as untreated infections can spread to other areas of the body. Pain combined with swelling and fever should be treated as an emergency.

How Do Dentists Treat Tooth Pain?

Effective treatment focuses on identifying and resolving the underlying cause of your discomfort. Based on your diagnosis, your dentist may recommend:

  1. Dental Fillings to restore areas affected by cavities.
  2. Root Canal Treatment to remove infection and preserve the natural tooth.
  3. Dental Crowns to strengthen and protect a weakened or cracked tooth.
  4. Tooth Extraction when the tooth cannot be saved.
  5. Gum Disease Treatment to address infection and inflammation around the gums.
  6. Custom Nightguards to reduce pressure from teeth grinding.

Emergency dental care is available at Sunflower Dental Spa, including same-day appointments for urgent pain, swelling, or infection. Timely treatment not only relieves discomfort but also prevents the issue from progressing into a more serious condition.

FAQs

How long does tooth pain last without treatment?

Tooth pain can last from a few hours to several days, depending on the cause. If the pain is due to infection or decay, it will not resolve on its own and often worsens over time without treatment.

Why does tooth pain get worse at night?

Tooth pain often feels worse at night because lying down increases blood flow to the head, which raises pressure around the affected tooth. Fewer distractions at night also make the pain more noticeable and harder to ignore.

Can a toothache go away on its own?

A toothache may temporarily subside, especially if caused by mild irritation. However, most cases involve underlying issues like decay or infection, which require dental treatment. Ignoring symptoms often leads to more severe pain and complications later.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Dr. Whitmore and her staff are amazing, gentle, kind caring people. My son did very well during his procedure today. Thank you so very much!
Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
