Oral Cancer Exam in Rockledge, FL

Oral Cancer Exam

At Sunflower Dental Spa, we prioritize your oral health and well-being. Beyond routine cleanings and fillings, we recommend regular screenings for oral cancer, a serious health concern. Our comprehensive Oral Cancer Exam in Rockledge, FL, provides a vital tool for early detection, significantly increasing treatment success rates.

What is the Oral Cancer Exam?

An oral cancer screening is a thorough examination to identify any indications of cancerous growth within the oral cavity. This encompasses various types of oral cancers, such as those affecting the mouth, jaw, and tongue.

During an oral cancer screening, several key areas are carefully examined, including:

  • The lining of the cheeks.
  • The floor and roof of the mouth.
  • The gums.
  • The lips.
  • The tongue.
  • The tonsils.

By scrutinizing these regions, dentists can detect any abnormalities or suspicious lesions that may indicate the presence of oral cancer. Regular screenings are vital for early detection and prompt intervention, which can significantly improve treatment outcomes and overall prognosis.

Who Should Get an Oral Cancer Exam in Rockledge, FL?

We recommend regular Oral Cancer Exams in Rockledge, FL, for everyone, particularly those with an increased risk, including:
Individuals who use tobacco products: Smoking, chewing tobacco, and other forms of tobacco use are significant risk factors for oral cancer.
Heavy alcohol consumers: Excessive alcohol consumption can increase your risk of oral cancer, especially when combined with tobacco use.
Those with a history of HPV infection: The human papillomavirus (HPV), particularly HPV 16 and 18, has been linked to certain types of oral cancer.
People with a weakened immune system:Individuals with compromised immune systems due to HIV/AIDS, organ transplantation, or long-term use of immunosuppressant medications may be at a higher risk.

What to Expect During Oral Cancer Exam in Rockledge, FL?

Our gentle and thorough Oral Cancer Exam in Rockledge, FL, typically involves the following steps:
Detailed Medical History Review: We will discuss your medical history, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and any previous diagnoses that may increase your risk of oral cancer.
Visual and Manual Examination: Your dentist will carefully examine your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, throat, and the inside of your mouth for any abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, white patches, or persistent sores. They will also gently feel your neck and jaw for any lymph node enlargement.
Screening Aids (Optional): Sometimes, your dentist may utilize additional tools to enhance the examination, such as VELscope® technology. This advanced system utilizes a special light to highlight potentially suspicious tissues that may not be visible during a standard exam.

FAQs

How is early oral cancer detected?

Oral cancer screenings are crucial in identifying potential early indicators of oral cancer. However, the definitive method to confirm the presence of oral cancer involves collecting suspicious cells from the oral cavity and subjecting them to laboratory testing. While oral cancer screenings are an initial step in the detection process, a conclusive diagnosis relies on laboratory analysis.

How to self-examine for oral cancer?

Perform a self-examination by gently feeling the floor of your mouth with your finger. Next, extend your tongue and meticulously inspect its top, sides, and undersurface using a flashlight. Use your fingers to palpate these areas as well. Should you detect anything unusual or concerning, seek prompt evaluation from a dentist or dental specialist for further assessment and guidance. Early detection is critical to effective treatment and optimal oral health.

Does oral cancer spread fast?

Most oral cancers belong to a category known as squamous cell carcinoma, characterized by rapid spread within the oral cavity. Tobacco use, including smoking and other forms of consumption, is closely associated with the development of most oral cancer cases. Additionally, excessive alcohol consumption significantly heightens the risk of developing oral cancer.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻
Excellent team and dental care .

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
