Different levels of sedation dentistry exist tailored to address your specific needs. These factors encompass your anxiety levels, the duration of the procedure, your medical history, and personal preferences. Among the most prevalent forms of sedation dentistry are nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and intravenous (IV) sedation.
Nitrous Oxide
Commonly called "laughing gas," nitrous oxide is administered through a mask or nosepiece. Its calming effects typically manifest within three to five minutes. Your dentist carefully regulates the sedation dosage throughout the procedure, ensuring comfort. Post-treatment, you receive pure oxygen to eliminate residual nitrous oxide from your system. Since the effects dissipate rapidly, you can safely drive yourself home afterward.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves the ingestion of sedative medication, usually in pill form, approximately an hour before the procedure. Triazolam (Halcion®), belonging to the diazepam (Valium®) family, is a commonly used medication. However, alternatives like zaleplon and lorazepam may also be utilized.
While oral sedation induces drowsiness, allowing some patients to fall asleep, you remain responsive to communication. Upon completion of the procedure, a gentle nudge awakens you. Due to its temporary impact on memory and motor skills, arranging transportation home from your appointment is imperative.
Intravenous (IV) Sedation
IV sedation dentistry represents the deepest level of conscious sedation available within a dental setting. Sedative medications are administered directly into your bloodstream through an IV line. Throughout the procedure, your dentist monitors vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, adjusting the dosage as needed. Reversal medications can be employed if necessary.
Most individuals undergoing IV sedation dentistry experience sleep-like states and retain little to no memory of the treatment upon awakening. This option is particularly beneficial for individuals with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing extensive procedures.

FAQs

Can I have sedation dentistry if I'm pregnant?

Typically, sedation dentistry isn't advised for pregnant women due to the potential impact of certain sedative medications on fetal development. However, nitrous oxide might be administered during the second trimester in specific situations. Nevertheless, as a general rule, most dentists prefer to defer sedation dentistry until after pregnancy to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery times differ based on your chosen sedation method and individual response to medications. Generally, individuals opting for nitrous oxide recover within 15 to 30 minutes and can safely drive home post-appointment. For those selecting oral conscious sedation or IV sedation, complete recovery usually requires approximately 24 hours.

Is general anesthesia ever used in dentistry?

Certainly. In certain circumstances, yes. General anesthesia administered in a hospital or ambulatory surgery center might be necessary, especially when treating young children, adults with special needs, or individuals with severe dental anxiety. General anesthesia induces a state of complete unconsciousness during the procedure. This level of sedation requires advanced, specialized training on the dentist. Typically, an anesthesiologist administers this type of anesthesia in most cases.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻
Excellent team and dental care .
Very nice and informative .
Doctor Justin and Diane are awesome.

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
