What is teeth grinding?

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a habit where the upper and lower teeth press and rub against each other with too much force. It can happen while you sleep (sleep bruxism) or during the day when you are stressed, concentrating, or feeling anxious.

In many people, teeth grinding is linked with stress, sleep disorders, certain medications, and bite problems. Over time, this constant pressure can damage teeth, dental work, gums, and the jaw joint (TMJ), so early diagnosis and protection with a custom night guard is very important.

Why is treating teeth grinding important?

Treating teeth grinding early helps protect the strength, shape, and appearance of your teeth. When bruxism continues, it can chip or fracture teeth, wear away enamel, loosen fillings or crowns, and make teeth more sensitive to hot and cold.

Untreated teeth grinding can also lead to jaw pain, tension headaches, ear or neck pain, and TMJ problems that affect everyday chewing and speaking. By treating bruxism at Sunflower Dental Spa in Rockledge, FL, many patients can reduce pain, protect dental work, and avoid more complex treatment later.

Who needs teeth grinding treatment?

Many people are unaware they grind their teeth until a dentist or partner notices the signs. You may benefit from teeth grinding treatment at Sunflower Dental Spa in Rockledge, FL if you have:

  • Flattened, chipped, or worn-down teeth.
  • Cracked fillings, crowns, or other dental work that break repeatedly.
  • Sore or tight jaw muscles, especially in the morning.
  • Frequent dull headaches around your temples.
  • Tooth sensitivity with hot, cold, or biting pressure.
  • Clicking or discomfort in the jaw joint (TMJ).
  • A partner who hears grinding sounds while you sleep.

If you notice any of these signs in yourself or your child, schedule a teeth grinding evaluation in Rockledge, FL by calling 321-358-1730 so Dr. Wetmore can check your teeth and recommend the proper protection.

Benefits of teeth grinding treatment

Treating teeth grinding with a custom night guard or splint can offer many long-term benefits for your smile and comfort. At Sunflower Dental Spa in Rockledge, FL, your treatment plan is tailored to your bite, your symptoms, and your lifestyle.

Key benefits can include:

  • Protecting tooth enamel from wear and fractures.
  • Reducing jaw pain, stiffness, and morning discomfort.
  • Lowering the risk of cracked fillings and crowns.
  • Helping ease tension headaches related to bruxism.
  • Supporting healthier TMJ function and jaw movement.

If you have chipped teeth or TMJ problems, Dr. Wetmore may also review options such as restorative dentistry or TMJ therapy to ensure your treatment is complete and coordinated.

  1. Gentle consultation and exam: Dr. Wetmore discusses your symptoms, checks your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles, and may ask about your sleep patterns and stress levels.
  2. Diagnosis and discussion: If bruxism is present, your dentist explains the findings in easy terms and reviews your options, including a custom night guard if appropriate.
  3. Impressions or digital scan: The team takes detailed molds or a digital scan of your teeth so your guard fits snugly and comfortably.
  4. Custom night guard fabrication: A dental lab creates your guard based on your bite and the chosen material.
  5. Fitting and adjustment: At a follow-up visit, the guard is checked, adjusted as needed, and you learn how to insert, remove, and care for it.

What to expect after starting treatment for teeth grinding

Most patients adjust to wearing a custom night guard within a few nights, though it may feel different at first. As you continue to use it, many people notice less morning jaw soreness, fewer broken teeth, and improved comfort when chewing.

You will need to:

  • Wear your guard as directed, usually every night.
  • Clean it daily with cool water and a soft brush or recommended cleaner.
  • Store it in a ventilated case when not in use.
  • Bring it to your regular checkups in Rockledge, FL, so Dr. Wetmore can check the fit and wear.

If you ever notice new pain, changes in your bite, or damage to your guard, contact Sunflower Dental Spa promptly for an adjustment or replacement review.

FAQ's

What are the common signs of teeth grinding?

Common signs of teeth grinding include worn or flattened teeth, small chips that appear without apparent injury, and loose or damaged fillings or crowns. Many people also notice jaw soreness, morning headaches, ear or neck discomfort, and a partner may hear grinding sounds during sleep. If you notice these issues, a dental exam in Rockledge, FL can help confirm bruxism and start treatment.

Is teeth grinding dangerous if I ignore it?

Ignoring teeth grinding can allow slow but serious damage to build over time. Teeth can become sensitive, crack, or even break, and dental work like crowns or fillings can fail more often, leading to more complex and costly treatment. Long-term bruxism may also contribute to TMJ pain, headaches, and muscle tension around the face and neck.

How does a custom night guard help with teeth grinding?

A custom night guard, made from impressions or scans of your teeth, creates a protective layer between the upper and lower arches. This layer spreads out the forces of grinding, reduces wear on the enamel, and can ease strain on the jaw joints and muscles. Because it is tailored to your bite, it often feels more comfortable and secure than store-bought guards.

Will a night guard stop my teeth grinding completely?

A night guard does not always stop the grinding habit itself, but it is designed to protect teeth and jaw joints from damage while the habit continues. Some patients also notice a gradual reduction in muscle tension as the jaw is guided into a more relaxed position. Your dentist may suggest additional strategies, such as stress reduction or managing related health issues, to address underlying causes.

Is teeth grinding treatment painful?

Most people find teeth grinding treatment very comfortable. The exam involves checking your teeth, muscles, and jaw joints, and taking impressions or scans is usually quick and simple. When you first begin wearing a night guard, it may feel different or slightly awkward, but it should not cause pain; any rubbing or sore spots can usually be adjusted at the office in Rockledge, FL.

How long does a custom night guard last?

The lifespan of a custom night guard depends on how heavily you grind your teeth, the material used, and how well you care for it. Many guards last several years with proper cleaning and storage, while very heavy grinders may need replacement more often. Bringing your guard to regular checkups at Sunflower Dental Spa in Rockledge, FL helps Dr. Wetmore watch for wear and decide when it is time to repair or replace it.

Does insurance cover teeth grinding treatment?

Some dental insurance plans offer partial coverage for night guards when they are considered necessary to protect teeth, but policies differ widely. Before you begin treatment, the Sunflower Dental Spa team in Rockledge, FL can review your plan, send any needed documentation, and explain your estimated out-of-pocket cost. If coverage is limited, they can also discuss payment options or third-party financing that may be available.

Seriously the most kind, caring, thorough dentist I have ever been to. Dr. Wetmore was kind and attentive to my anxiety while at the same time making sure I was comfortable through a long drilling for a crown and very thorough making sure I was numb enough and the bite would be just right. I struggle with self care and this is the first dentist in my life where I wasn't shamed for it. And even though I was scared for the procedure I felt so safe here. Awesome place! The front desk staff, hygienist I saw and assistants were all super skilled and amazing too. Thanks ladies!

Sunflower Dental Spa is for me the FIRST Dental Office that I enjoy going to. I walk in and I am greeted by, 3 Wonderful Ladies with Beautiful Smiles. And even though they know that I can never remember their names, they know mine.
Rachel, my Dental Hygienist, took me back to begin my cleaning... Well at my last cleaning, I misunderstood something that she told me... so this time I asked her to please show me... and she did.
Once Rachel finished, she went and told my Wonderful and Most Excellent Dentist, Dr. Justin Lieneck that it was his turn to come in and check out my teeth. As Justin is checking out my teeth, I asked him, "Do the look okay? You are taking an awfully long time..."
Justin said, "I'm checking each one of them...but I don't see cavities." That isn't exactly what he said, but I can't remember word for word, like I used too.
But if you are looking for a place to go that will take care of your Teeth.... I Highly recommend Sunflower Dental Spa 🌻
Excellent team and dental care .

It’s hard to put my appreciation into words. Dr. Wetmore and her staff were so helpful and welcoming. They were able to work with my insurance and I to go from consultation to surgery in less than a month, and for half the price I was quoted from Aspen. I was very nervous going into the surgery and amount of extractions I needed but was put at ease with all of the commendations they offered. I highly recommended the laughing gas for anyone that feels the same way. The entire surgery was painless, completely painless and took about two hours. It’s now one day post op and other than some soreness I have never felt better. Sunflower dental deserves all the praise they get in these reviews. Truly an amazing experience. I am so grateful.
